Oat β-glucan is extracted from oat bran and is a multi-functional addictive to active cosmetics. It is a glucan made up of cellotrioses and cellotetroses. The proportion of cellotrioses and cellotetroses in β-glucan is 3:7. After the 1980s, Wood et.al. discovered with specific enzymatic hydrolysis that the glycosidic bonds of cellotrioses and cellotetroses in oatβ-glucan form a single spiraled chain; in over 85% of oat β-glucan molecules, there is one cellotriose between every 2-3 cellotetroses. A large amount of hydrophilic groups are spread evenly on the main chain of glucan. According to current research results, oat β-glucan is a natural anti-ageing substance.
Cosmetic Functions of Oat β-Glucan
1. Excellent Penetration Absorption Function
Due to its single spiraled chain sequence of cellotrioses and cellotetroses, oatβ-glucan is able to penetrate skins quickly. In International Cosmetics Science (Volume 27, Issue 5), researchers published their research results on the penetration absorption of oat β-glucan. In the experiment, tracking atoms are added to 0.5%β-glucan, which is applied to the abdomen skin of volunteers with an application rate of 5mg/cm2. According to feedback signals of tracking atoms, oat β-glucan can quickly penetrate into the depth of skins through the lipid between cells.
Compared with yeastβ-glucan, the molecules of oatβ-glucan are in the form of a direct chain. Its unique space structure endows it with a much better penetration absorption function. It is able to provide immediate and effective nutrition supplement to the skin. According to the experiment, cosmetics adopting oatβ-glucan are twice more effective than cosmetics using yeastβ-glucan.

2.1. Improving Skin Smoothness
Human body experiment
- experiment instrument: skin coarseness tester;
- experiment duration: 8 hours;
- volunteers: five male and five female;
- content of effective substance in various creams: ① Oat β-glucan 5%;
② Pure cream.
After eight hours of consecutive use, the skin becomes much smoother. According to experiment results, under the same conditions, oat β-glucan can make the skin 43.7% smoother. Please refer to the diagram below.

2.2. Improving Skin Elasticity

②5% yeastβ-glucan;
③ Pure cream.
According to the experiment, oatβ-glucan has a slightly better result in improving skin elasticity than yeastβ-glucan. Main reasons for this are: ① the space structure of oat β-glucan is a single spiraled direct chain, while yeast β-glucan has many branches, which hinders the penetration absorption of yeastβ-glucan. ② the molecular weight of oatβ-glucan is smaller than that of yeastβ-glucan, making it easier to penetrate to the depth of skins and giving it a great advantage against yeastβ-glucan in improving skin elasticity. The result of the experiment is shown in the diagram below.

2.3. Promoting the Synthesis of Collagen
Animal experiment
The experiment uses 1% oat β-glucan preparation; The control group uses 1% hyaluronic acid preparation.
Mice are divided into two groups: the control group and the oatβ-glucan group, with eight mice in every group. The hair to both sides of the backs is removed with pet hair trimmers, with the size of hair removal as 3cm×3cm. The area is then washed with water. Then select 2cm×2cm within the removal area from each mouse: for the control group, no other treatment is conducted besides washing with water; for the oatβ-glucan group, oat β-glucan is applied to the selected area with equal dosage for each mouse once a day. After seven days, researchers examined the content of collagen in the skins of the selected area of these mice.
According to the experiment, the content of CollagenⅠand Collagen Ⅲ in the oat β-glucan group is obviously higher than that of the control group. This proves that oat β-glucan can promote the synthesis of various collagens, effectively reduce skin sagging and ageing, and restore injuries to the skin brought about ageing and environmental factors. The result of the experiment is shown in the diagrams below.
2.4. Highly Effective Moisturizing Effects

②0.1% hyaluronic acid;
③3% yeast β-glucan.
Oat β-glucan has excellent moisturizing functions. Besides, its unique membrane forming function can provide a smooth texture for the skin. As is proved by the experiment, the moisturizing effects of oat β-glucan are much better than hyaluronic acid and yeast β-glucan. This may be because the molecules of oat β-glucan contain many hydrophilic groups, while the hydrophilic groups of yeast β-glucan are in a restrained pattern. The result of the experiment is shown in the diagram below.

4. Improving the Immune Mechanism of the Skin
Many renowned international institutes including the Medical School of Harvard University, Toulon University, Washington University and the Radioactive Biological Institute of American Air Force have proved that β-glucan can significantly improve immunity.
Researchers bundledβ-glucan to the receptors of the most prevalent neutrophils in the among the natural immune cells in the human body, and increased the ability of the neutrophils to detect infection locations and eliminate bacteria. Under the effects of blood protein, neutrophils moved towards the infection location and discovered the primary vein of bacterial infection, and effected a complete restoration through quick response.

5. Good Skin Restoration Functions
Oat β-glucan has been approved by FDA and the European Union to heal wounds and burning injuries and relevant products have been promoted. Experiments show that oat β-glucan can immediately mitigate wound pain and increase the healing speed by about 15%.
